Hi Auburn North,

Last Thursday Auburn North hosted a debate against Blaxcell Street Public School. The topic of the debate was: 'The Future of Books is Bleak'.
Auburn North was the affirmative team. This meant they agreed with the statement.

The great news is that our very talented debaters won the competition!!
Congratulations Collin, Jamie, Noor and Tennyson. You must have put forward some very strong arguments. What were they?

The bad news is, according to our debaters, the future of books is bleak. That means - not great.
I'd like to know what you think. Do you agree? Is the future of books bleak? Why?
Does anyone think the future of books is NOT bleak? I'd really like to hear from you!!

Send in your arguments, or vote on the poll below.

Mrs Clift

It is certainly bleak with the technology developing everyday there's no way books will stay for long and remember the more books the more trees are cut down.

Hi Noor,

You make a good point. However, I would argue that technology has a far greater environmental impact on our planet than cutting down trees. Think of all the dead technology that goes to landfill. This is far worse as computers are made from materials that are not biodegradable. Therefore books are better for the planet!

What other arguments did you make?

Hi Mrs Clift.

I'm not saying that books aren't good for us, but as technology is improving, and more people prefer to use the computer other than books. For example, our project. More people prefer to use the internet other than books.

Hi Mrs. Clift,
I disagree with your statement beacause trees give us the OXYGEN and that is more important; our lives.

hi Mrs Clift i disagree that books are bleck because whan we grow older and you need a story to read to your children what are you going to use a book of course beacause if you use the i pad they will want to play with it not read a book and then theyll get addicted to it and when they grow up theyll buy it and they can spend all day on it and it can make them lazy!

also it does cost alot of money to buy it!
anyway thankyou for reading bye bye

Sajah,

Hi 6C,

Tennyson, you make a very valid point! No wonder you won the debate.

Yuhan, you also make a good point (and very politely too).
I agree that students prefer to use computers to do research, but look at your topic- Current Events. For this topic you are more likely to find information online than in a book.
However, who is writing the website? Anyone can publish information to the net. How do you know it is accurate??

Sajah, I agree with you. Books at bedtime are the best!

Have a great long weekend everyone.

See you Tuesday.

I Think that books are bleak because in the future books will be the past because there will be ebooks in our pockets and voice books because children will like to listen and read along with new technology. People will develop new electronics that will let you read a book without a paper book.

Thats why the future of books are bleak

I agree with Mrs Cliff,

Books are good for children's education and technology isn't very good

I disagree Mrs Clift,

Books are bleak and might not be used in the future because technology would be a faster way of researching and other. Also technology improves instead of books (eg)technology gets faster and faster. Changes how it looks.

Therefore books are bleak!

Hello Mrs Clift

Books are bleak because of the technology and might not stay in the future.Technology gets faster day by day which makes it more better, therfore books are bleak.

hi everyone

I think that books are bleak because of the technology developing day by day and books don't. I also think that books will not be used in the future because of the technology.

I hope you like my argument!

BYE!

Hi,

I truly agree that the future of books is bleak because most people would much rather go on the internet and play games or watch movies then sit around reading a book all day.

Mrs Clift, but maybe some students wasn't interested in doing projects. Maybe some of the students just wants to finish their project, as they wont care about whether the information is true or not. Mrs Clift, how often do you see a student suggesting to do or doing a project on their own opinion? Books are good for us, and I don't think it would be bleak in the future. I just think that people would use technology more than using books.

Hi everyone,
Thank you for your comments about the future of books.
I think we all agree that technology is changing the way we read. Perhaps the good news is that we are still reading... but in a different way.

Nargis, from the amount of books you borrow I don't believe for a second that you would rather play games on the internet than read!! Impossible!

Yuhan, once again you make a very interesting point. I hadn't considered that students don't care if what they are reading is correct as I wonder if what I am reading (on the internet) is accurate ALL the time.

If you could choose a project (based on your own opinion) what would it be?

Faris, I did smile at your argument. However apart from developing technologies I'm not sure why else the future of books is bleak (according to the arguments posted)

Technology is great. However books don't require a battery charger to work. They don't break down, need constant updating, virus protection or cost a lot of money.

Technology is great but in my opinion the future of books is not bleak.

I was discussing this at home with my daughter and son-in-law because they have a little boy (my grandson) who is 3 and a half. We were trying to imagine what school will be like for him, especially by the time he graduates from high school. I think everyone should be provided with an IPad. You can download any book you want. You can use it like a computer. You can do all you research on it. And it is small and light enough to carry it every where with you. No, I don't have one. I don't even have an IPhone or and IPod.

Hi Mrs Clift,
I think that the books are not bleak because books are legendary and most people want to be authors when they grow up.The books are educational.Without books, people will be playing with eletronic devises all day long without learning anything.

Hi Miss Clift

I think the future of books would be bleak around 30th century because lots of technology is taking over. People are inventing lots of products. Another reason why books would probably be bleak because lots of people are saying we are wasting trees, which is kind of true. These are the reasons why i think the future of books is bleak but maybe my grand grand grand grand grand grand children might see a book in the museum.

Thanks for reading
